Audrey Hepburn

by Stephanie from Lynchburg

Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Bulgium. After much hardship while growing up during World War II, Audrey was able to escape the hard life of many living in Europe. Audrey never felt that she was destined to be on the big screen but making movies became a huge part of her life and ultimately her life-long career.

Most well-known for her roles in movies such as "Breakfast at Tiffanys", "Roman Holiday", and "Sabrina", Audrey was not only seen as both a film and fashion icon, she was also known for her role of being a humanitarian. She spent a lot of her time trying to empower women in a time that many felt they were nothing more than "housewives". She was known for the way she spoke to people and how she made women and men look at beauty differently. Although she was constantly in the spotlight, she did not believe that beauty was determined by how we looked on the outside. "The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul."- Audrey Hepburn.

From 1988 until her death on January 20, 1993, Audrey was a Goodwill ambassador for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). Many believe that Audrey used her image and strong personal skills with people to be the cause of her work with UNICEF but to Audrey, it was not only her way of creating change but also as a way for her to repay all the strong, hardworking people that saved her life and many others from starvation in 1945 Holland. Due to her hard work and the dedication, she was awarded the the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Interesting facts: Was married and divorced twice and had one child in each marriage. Audrey was often cast to play opposite men who were very well-known in Hollywood and often times much older than she was. She won an Oscar for her role in "Roman Holiday" which was one of her very first roles. Audrey is one of twelve actresses to have won the Triple Crown of Acting (an Oscar, Emmy and Tony).

-For attractive lips, Speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, Seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, Share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, Let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, Walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, Have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, And redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, You will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; One for helping yourself, and the other for helping others. (http://quotations.about.com/od/stillmorefamouspeople/a/audreyhepburn.htm)
