Many people know Abraham Lincoln as the great 16th president. He not only led the country through the Civil War, but did not see he is one of the greatest president’s this country has ever seen. What many people do not know is that Abraham Lincoln went deeper than just being president. He freed the slaves, fought through the civil war, and gave the Gettysburg Speech that changed American ways forever. After Lincoln left the militia with Native Americans, he became interested in law. Lincoln studied law and went on to serve in the House of Representatives in 1847, unsuccessfully, for only one term. Abraham made a promise to never return to politics, but when he heard about the possible spread of slavery, he was outraged. He ran for the states other Senate seat, In 1855, and lost. Lincoln ran again for president In May 1860, and with a close vote, won the election. Abraham Lincoln went on to be the 16th president of the United States. He got rid of slavery, led and fought a brutal Civil War, and changed this Country forever. Abraham was dedicated, concentrated, and never gave up on what he believed.

Abraham Lincoln spent his years as 16th president fighting to free slaves from southerners. Abraham believed all people were created equally and should have the same rights. Abraham is a hero for being strong, determined, and for never giving up. Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in the backwoods of Hardin County, Kentucky, on February 12th, 1809. He was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, who were both poor and illiterate farmers. Lincoln was always closer to his mother, and when she passed away in 1819, Lincoln turned to his sister, Sarah, for guidance in Indiana. Lincoln received less than a year of schooling, but taught himself to read with any books he could find. After his sister died in 1828, Lincoln joined a flatboat expedition down the Mississippi River. In 1831, his family moved to Illinois, where he volunteered for the State’s militia to fight Native Americans in what is now called the Black Hawk War. Although he was never in a battle or saw any, he was elected captain by his people. He left in 1832, settled in New Salem, Illinois, where he married Mary Todd and in eleven years had four sons: Robert, Edward, William, And Thomas. Lincoln was elected to the House of Representatives, serving one term in 1847, the start of a life long career. Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor who sided with the South, while watching a play on April 14th. Although he thought he was remembered most for signing the Emancipation Proclamation, it is his speech- Gettysburg Address, that has Abraham Lincoln so well known.

Abraham is a hero not only because of his hard work, but also for his dedication to changing this country forever. He believed all people were created equally and tried his best to accomplish just that. He made it clear that government for the people, should be made by the people themselves. He worked hard to establish this way of living, and running a government. Some people disagreed with his ways, but this is how the government was run. Without this rule, people would have made decisions for all the people, only because they were put in charge to do so. People would have never had a chance to speak out and had their opinions heard.

Abraham Lincoln also believed very strongly in not having slavery anywhere in the world. This believe also fell under the belief that all people were created equally. Abraham worked very hard to try and stop slavery in the South, and let the people be free. It didn’t matter the color of your skin; to Lincoln, all men were created to have equal potential and equal treatment, but kept as an individual. His hard work did not fail him. Slowly but surely the Southern states started giving up their slaves, but not without a fight. Although slavery was now over, it was time for the beginning of The Civil War, the bloodiest and deadliest war in American history.

Abraham Lincoln accomplished many great things in his life time. He worked very hard, and never let go of his dreams and possibilities for American’s. He never lost hope, even though he failed at times. He kept believing and was determined to make his visions of America come true. Abraham never lost sight, and never gave in. Abraham Lincoln banned slavery forever, changed the way of society and government, and changed the United States forever and for good.
