“The glue that holds all relationships together- including the relationship between the leader and the led is trust, and trust is based on integrity,” (Brian Tracy). Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, was a man who lived his life with integrity. 1809 was when Abraham Lincoln was born to the parents of Nancy, the mother, and Thomas, the father. He lived in a log cabin in Hodgenville for two years, in Kentucky. It was 1818 when he decides to move to Indiana because they didn’t want to live the rest of their life in a log cabin. He moved there because they could buy off land directly from the government. As his career he was the 16th president, he helped the nation become a better place because of his law and his open mind. Lincoln went to school when he was 7 and continued to 21. He was a very smart man. He enjoyed books, and liked to read and write. Lincoln was really so smart that he wrote a book of history because he was interested in it. When he reached 21, his friends thought that he could be a good president because of his education and his leadership. They encourage him to do that. When he participated in the debate with Douglas in 1858, he won! Clearly, due to his leadership, his fight for equality of all citizens and his open mind, Abraham Lincoln should be known as an American hero.

A true leader, Abraham Lincoln demonstrated he could be considered a hero. As quoted by Lincoln, "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure; permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall”, (Holzer). Visibly in this citation, Lincoln proved leadership on how the White House and the nation were going to exist when he became president. He also displayed that he did not want separation in the people; he wanted everybody to be treated equal. He strived for no one to be judged by their appearance, but to be viewed on their personality. Lincoln showed another type of heroism, hence the quote: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”, (Holzer). This eventually resulted in his law named Emancipation Proclamation, consequently for the freedom of slaves, enforcing that no human being should be treated differently just because of the color of their skin. He wished for the nation to be equal itself and care for one another instead of hating one another. Lincoln’s vision indicates that he was a true leader because he was motivated to stand up for all people no matter what race, gender, creed, etc. they were.

During his presidency, Abraham Lincoln was very open-minded when some may have not have felt the same way. Some people thought that whenever he gave speeches to people, they thought it was hopeless to free the slaves. He inspired others with his great speeches throughout his presidential term. Lincoln quoted: “It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction”, (Holzer). He had an open mind when stating this because it showed his vision and what he was going to do to help our nation become a better place for all mankind. Lincoln wanted to end slavery during the time he ran for president of the United States. “In the Emancipation Proclamation, he stated that he would free the slaves, and there would be no blacks or any race slaved or any harm brought to them”, (Holzer). By action, it showed that he felt that all men are created equal no matter the color of their skin. He did not tolerate the slavery because he thought it was an evil thing to do to anyone, so he passed that law, for all slaves to become free.

Abraham Lincoln’s kindness, leadership, and open vision has lead us to admire him. Most think he was a great leader due to his performance during his era. This is why Abraham Lincoln should be known as a hero and should never be forgotten because all of the hard work and dedication he put forth during his presidency.
