Abraham Lincoln

by John from Baltimore

A hero is someone who is brave, unselfish, and focused. A hero must be brave because he or she must be able to face his or her fear when he or she will have to. A hero has to be focused on his task; otherwise he or she will make many careless mistakes and fail the task he is doing. Finally a hero must be unselfish. He or she needs to put other people’s needs before his or hers. My hero is Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln is brave because he stood up for what he believed in. He never had body guards. That left him an easy target of assassination. He also wanted to abolish slavery but all the people in the southern states wanted to keep the slaves because their economy depended upon it. So soon a civil war started between the northern and southern states. Abraham Lincoln led the northern states.

Secondly, Abraham Lincoln was focused on abolishing slavery. He believed that everybody should be free no matter the color of their skin. In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln stated that “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. This meant that slaves are equal to us and that they shouldn’t be treated like animals. This focus let Abraham Lincoln do what needed to be done to win the Civil War.

Lastly Abraham Lincoln was unselfish. He wanted to free slaves from their unfair treatment. They would get whipped and beat on for making mistakes any human would make. By doing this he risked the fact that he will not be re-elected as president or the southern states could send an assassin to kill him. President Lincoln did it anyway because he didn’t think of himself. He thought of the poor mistreated slaves.

Lincoln won re-election in 1864 but was assassinated later that year by a man named John Wilkes Booth who was a well known actor and spy from Maryland. Fortunately Booth struck too late. Slavery was already abolished from all the states. Abraham Lincoln died a hero with his bravery, focus, and unselfishness. This is how Abraham Lincoln was a hero.
