Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky on February 12, 1800. He lived and was born in a one room log cabin. When Abraham was nine years old his mother died. A year later his father remarried.

When Abraham was 21, he made his first political speech about improving navigation on the Sangamon River. On August 4, 1834 Lincoln was elected to the Illinois General Assembly, and he started to study law. It was also the year he met Ann Rutledge. After a year of courting Ann Rutledge, she died from fever. In 1836 he was re-elected to the Illinois General Assembly.

On September 9 he received his law license and started to date Mary Owens. When Abe was 28 he proposed to Mary Owens but she declined him and it was over.

A year later he was again re-elected to the Illinois General Assembly. When he turned 30, he met Mary Todd at a Christmas dance. They were engaged a year later. On August 1, 1841 Robert Todd Lincoln was born to Abe and Mary. Two years later Edward Baker Lincoln was born on March 10, 1846. In that same year, Abe was nominated and elected to the U. S. House of Representatives. The family moved to Washington D.C. Three years after they moved, tragedy struck. Abe’s son, Edward Baker Lincoln, died. He was four years old. Thomas Lincoln was born in 1849.

In the year 1855, Abe Lincoln was not re-elected U.S. Senator. When Abe was around the age of 50, he was nominated as Republican Senator from Illinois. He was up against a Democrat, Stephen A. Douglas. Abe lost to Stephen A Douglas.

In 1860 Abe gave a speech on slavery in New Haven, Connecticut. He was also nominated to be the Republican candidate for the President of the United States. Six months later he was elected to the U. S. President.

On April 12, 1861, there was an attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War.

In 1865, John Wilkes Booth failed a kidnap attempt when Lincoln didn’t arrive as expected to a soldier’s home. Just month later General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to General Ulysses S. Grant. Five days later Abe and his wife Mary went to Ford’s to see a play, “Our American Cousin.” During the 3rd act, around 10:13 p.m., John Wilkes Booth slipped through the back door and shot the President in the head. President Lincoln died at 7:22 in the morning. He was 53 years old.

On April 26th, John Wilkes Booth was shot and killed in a tobacco factory in Virginia. On May 4, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, outside Springfield, Illinois.

Abraham Lincoln is a hero to me because he abolished slavery and set innocent people free. He was a great president that led our country to see the truth in everybody’s rights. I will always admire Abraham Lincoln and I hope I persuaded you to admire him too. If you have a different president you admire I hope you will include him in the My Hero websites. Thank you for reading my page.
