One of the greatest heroes in America was Abraham Lincoln. He was considered as a hero because of all the magnificent things he did and his special appearance. He was a very poor person, but then became famous and well known. When he grew up, he became the president of the United States.

As a young boy, Abraham had a very poor and sad childhood. Abraham barely had any education, and the only thing he can learn from were books, which he had to travel very far to get one. His lack of education was because his family was very poor, and the neighborhood where he lived didn't have that much education. Abraham's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln died at the age of 34, and the event was horrible to Abraham. Nancy died of milk sickness (tremetol) on October 5th, 1818.

While Abraham grew up, he met a girl by the name of Ann Rutledge. Before they could be engaged a fever came to New Salem and she died on August 25th, 1835 when she was 22. About a year after, Abraham was engaged with Mary Owens.  In 1841, the engagement was all so suddenly called off. After a year, on November 4, 1842 they were engaged again and got married. They had 4 children, which only 1 survived to adulthood.

When he began to get older, he became more intelligent but more independent. Abraham led the Black Hawk War in 1832 and won. He also led the Union against the Confederates in 1865, also known as the Civil War. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history.

After the Civil War in April 9, 1865, all was peaceful.  But shortly after 5 days, on April 14, Confederate helper and actor of Ford's theater, John Wilkes Booth, shot President Lincoln with a pistol and escaped from the back door. Doctors tried to help Abraham but there was nothing they could do. Shortly the next morning, he died at 7:22 A.M and was buried in his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.
