Abraham Lincoln

by Benjamin from Iowa City

Our 16th President
Our 16th President

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th in 1809. He was born in Kentucky to a poor family. He served as an Illinois state legislator and served one term as a member of the United States House of Representatives. He was a father of four children. He served as President from 1861 until he was assassinated on April 15, 1865.

Abraham Lincoln is a true American hero. Elected in 1860 to be the country's 16th president, Lincoln is best known for his efforts to curtail the slave trade. He was president during the Civil War, and is commonly credited with holding the country together through difficult times.

Lincoln was a large proponent of equality. He fought valiantly to end slavery in the U.S., and finally succeeded through his famous Emancipation Proclamation. However, abolishing slavery was not always a popular view to take. When he was running for president, many politicians, including the presidential candidates from the Democratic and Whig parties, were reluctant to take a definite stance on the issue, fearing that they would alienate southern voters. Lincoln, however, was an outspoken opponent of slavery. For standing up for what he believed in, even when it was not the safe thing to do, Abraham Lincoln is our hero.

Abraham Lincoln's mindset has had a major place in America. He is one of the major reasons we in the United States try to treat others equally. It is because of what Abraham Lincoln did that other great American heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks had the freedom to do the great things they did for the American people.
