Anthony Robles was a hero because he wrestled with only one leg. Robles was born on July 20, 1988 with only one leg for an unknown reason. At age three, he refused to wear a prosthetic leg when he was in sixth grade. He set the school record for the most push-ups. Robles began wrestling in eighth grade after he watched his older cousin's wrestling practice. Robles could be considered a hero because of his dedication, perseverance, and fortitude.
Anthony Robles shows dedication because he was an outstanding wrestler at Arizona State University. Robles wrestled in the 125 pound weight class and won the 2011 NCAA title against the defending champion Matt McDonogh 7-1. Anthony was also ranked sixth in the nation during his sophomore year in high school. He won two state championships and one national championship during his senior year. He finished his senior year with a 96-0 record. His overall record during his high school year was 129-15. Anthony Robles achieved all of these insane accomplishments with only one leg. Most wrestlers can't even achieve them with two legs. His determination to do good makes him a hero.
Another reason Robles is a hero is because of his perseverance. Anthony Robles shows perseverance in many ways. One example is that he was born with only one leg. It was hard to use a prosthetic leg because he has no stump to put the prosthetic on. He also had trouble with his family. His step-father left his family and his mom became very ill. Anthony offered to quit wrestling to help the family but his mom refused to let him. Anthony persevered through his disability to become one of the top wrestlers in the world. He was given the Most Courageous Athlete award and the Jimmy V award at the 2011 ESPYs. His perseverance makes him a hero.
The next and final reason Anthony Robles is a hero is because of his fortitude. Anthony has to use fortitude to live every day life, whether it is a problem with his family or just a wrestling match. Anthony practices his mental game for a whole year. Because of this, Anthony is not only physically strong but he is very mentally strong. Anthony uses his amazing fortitude to help him through the problems he may face with his disability. The final reason Anthony uses fortitude is to focus on matches and push himself to never give up. Because of his fortitude, he can be considered a hero.
Anthony Robles, the one legged wrestler is a hero because of his determination, perseverance, and fortitude. Anthony is also the author of the book "Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated". On and off the mat, Anthony Robles continues to inspire the world using his incredible grip strength to take down the top wrestlers to win titles and become a hero.
