Inspiration involves catching the attention of others and motivating them to do great things. Personally, I have been inspired greatly by a hardworking orthopedic surgeon who has faced many challenges. I first became aware of my personal career hero, Antonio Webb, as I was researching careers I may want to pursue in the future. I decided that Dr. Webb is a perfect personal career hero for me. I have always wanted to be a doctor or nurse of some sort, because I would love to have the chance of saving lives as a job. I am a freshman at Capistrano Valley High School, in Mission Viejo, California, and I have been researching careers like these and trying to decide which career to take part in when I am older. To pursue a career like this, I plan to work very hard, just like Antonio Webb. I plan to challenge myself, continue to get good grades and learn from my mistakes throughout high school.
Antonio Webb decided to focus all his effort into becoming an orthopedic surgeon. This takes much hard work and time, as it is a very important job involving saving lives. According to Study.com, orthopedic surgeons work with patients with musculoskeletal problems, having to do with bones and limbs. To pursue this career, a person needs to have a Doctor of medicine degree, board certification in orthopedic surgery, a state medical license, and a four to five year residency in a hospital. Again, according to Study.com, orthopedic surgeons earned a salary of $233,150 on average during 2013. Careers that are similar to orthopedic surgery include nurse practitioners, physician assistant, and surgical tech. Reading about and researching these motivates me to strive to be involved in this career, and makes me respect Dr. Webb even more. In orthopedic surgery, there have been some exciting new advancements. According to the Healio website, some of these include the arthroscope, bone morphogenetic proteins, and Porous metals, which are all improving the chance of survival and accuracy of orthopedic surgery.
There are many traits that are recommended when it comes to being an orthopedic surgeon. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website, a few of these traits include dedication, calmness, strength, and coordination. Antonio Webb had almost all of these traits growing up, especially strength. He had a very difficult life as a young person. . I discovered an article explaining his inspiring story. As I continued to read, I saw that he was motivated and encouraged by his father, much of his family went to prison, causing him to struggle in applying to medical school. Antonio overcome many challenges and grew up in a rough place, Shreveport, Louisiana, where drugs, violence and gangs were involved. Amazingly, Antonio overcame these struggles, and graduated from the University of Texas. Then, he was accepted to medical school after several failed attempts. He says that medical school was the best time of his life, although it was challenging, and this time kept him working and inspired him to follow his dream and become an orthopedic surgeon. These days, Dr. Webb works at University Hospital, always putting his all into his work and saving lives. He loves what he does, and he is proud to say that he fulfilled his dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. He continues to inspire and motivate his fans after writing a book called Overcoming the Odds. This book lets people understand the struggles from the early life of an amazing surgeon, and influences them to follow their dreams and NEVER give up!
Antonio Webb has impacted the lives of many people. In writing his book, people of all ages have been inspired. In it he showed his talent and his ability to encourage others to achieve their goals. Besides this, Antonio participated in a lot of community service and volunteer work. During his interview on the Association of American Medical Colleges website, he provides details about this work, and explains that he was involved in much community service. He chose to volunteer in different places including a hospital shelter, donate money to foundations, and act as a mentor to students wanting to grow up successful. From all of this, it is easy to see the type of person that Dr. Webb is. He is hard working, positive, dedicated, and a leader, which is why I consider him to be my personal career hero. John C. Maxwell said, "Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them", which I think describes my personal career hero perfectly.
I think it would be so rewarding to pursue a career similar to Antonio Webb's, and I would love to impact the lives of others, just like he has. In order to do this, I need to continue working hard and do everything I can to make this possible. Right now, as a freshman in high school, I consider myself a leader. I am in cheer, showing spirit for my school and motivating others. I like to participate in community service often and I would love to begin volunteering and helping others. Also, I plan to challenge myself and take part in advanced placement or honors classes in the subjects that I excel in. In college, I would like to major in biology, like Dr. Webb. However, while growing up I would like to keep exploring my interests and be open to discovering other career options as well. In my later life, I want to be successful, live in a place that I love, and maybe even have a family. My personal career hero, Antonio Webb, has inspired me and many others to overcome challenges and to become successful doing what they love, and I am motivated and excited to see what the future has in store for me.
