Who do you think of when you hear the word "hero"? I think of a person who thinks of others first and then himself. I think that a hero should be a positive person, one who can change any negative situation to his advantage. This is why Abraham Lincoln is my hero.
Abe always was a positive person. He had a great sense of humor and never was provoked by insults. One time in a political debate Abe's opponent called him "two-faced". Abe replied, "If I had another face do you think I would wear this one?". Abe was elected the 16th president of the United States on November 6th, 1860, after being a lawyer for many years.
Many major things happened in Abe's life while he was president, but most important was the Civil War that began just five months after Lincoln became president. The Civil War was not over slaves as many people think, but it was about keeping the U.S. together as a united nation. Lincoln freed the slaves during the Civil War. Five days after the Civil War ended Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. He died the next morning.
Abraham Lincoln was a hero to others near and far. He is a hero to others near and far because he did many things for this country. He was a hero to all the freed slaves and a hero to other Americans because he kept the U.S. together. Without him the U.S. might still be in two parts and Most African-Americans would still be slaves.
Now that you know about what Lincoln did, you know that he thought of others first before himself. You saw that he was a positive person and could turn any negative situation into a positive one. Abraham Lincoln is a hero to others near and far, including me.
