An Anonymous Hero

by Triston from Hawesville

A soldier, my grandpa, served with is my hero. He saved my grandpa and two of the other men in his platoon. My grandpa and two of his friends were trapped behind a car and this soldier (my grandpa never told us his name) went in to help them after him and the other men had escaped. My grandpa said that he has never before or since then seen a more heroic man.

He said that the man ran from cover to cover and gave them covering fire while he tried to reach the three men from his platoon. My grandpa said that the man moved from cover to cover like he was born to do it. He said he knew exactly when to move and when to stand and shoot at their attackers. He said that this man was my grandpa and his friends' hero.

My grandpa wasn't a person that would ever give praise to someone else. But he said that on that day he praised that soldier for his heroism. He said that was the first time that he had actually felt the need to praise someone. And he was never a religious man, but he said that when he and his two squad mates were behind the car he prayed to God for someone to save them. And he said the other soldier was God's answer.
