My Sister, Ashley

by Dan from Alaska

A hero to me is someone who can make someone else look good and make themselves look better. A hero is someone who will give you advice. Another way I define a hero is someone who laughs it off when they feel pain or embarrassment. I also think a hero is someone who can watch what you are doing and tell you what you're doing wrong. My older sister Ashley is all of this to me.

Ashley is a year older than me. She and I have been the closest friends for as long as I can remember. Some people used to think we were twins. As young kids we did everything together. When I was really young, no one was able to understand me because I had a speech problem. Ashley even used to talk for me.

Ash is a good teacher and always tries to help others. When my grades dropped at the end of the first quarter, my sister stopped what she was doing and helped me get my math grades up to an 80%. After she was done helping me, she brought her grades up to the 100s again.

Every year my Aunty Joann holds a birthday party for my cousin Sonja and every year the kids play tag downstairs in the basement. One time we were playing tag and I couldn’t catch anyone, so Ash said to go after only one person so I went after Jennifer and I caught her really fast.

My sister first went to camp without me, because I was too young. At camp they had paintball fights every night except for the first night. They started a game called terminator. Ash didn’t know how to play the game so when everyone was away Ash was walking towards the terminator. She shot him on the X, and he shot her wrist at point blank range. She told me she wanted to cry, but she couldn’t stop laughing.

One time when we were little we were building a snow fort. She told me to build a sun roof so I got the sledge hammer and held it by the handle. The hammer was hanging down and I’d pick it up and drop it. Then she started crawling through and the hammer broke through and hit her on the head. She told me she wanted to cry but she couldn’t stop laughing.

Every year during Mother's Day we have a softball game. Last year my sister was having a good game, and she was up to bat and there was someone on every base. Ash hit a blooper right to the right fielder and he caught her out but the person on third tagged up and made it home and her team won the game.
