In Western Australia the bush is very thick and bush fires can happen easily. People in towns rely on the volunteer bush fire brigades to protect them against fires.

There are nearly 25,000 bush fire volunteers in Western Australia. They help fight fires and also help people learn more about how fires start and how to stop them.

FESA is the organisation that helps the volunteers do a good job. The volunteers are trained and learn to use all the equipment.

Volunteer fire fighters learn to operate the pumps and hoses and other equipment on their trucks.

We are in year 3 at primary school in Kalannie, Western Australia. We have been learning about heroes and we think that the volunteer fire fighters are real heroes.
