Betty J. Baskin

by Natalie from British Columbia

Elizabeth Jean Baskin

Betty is my grandma and an important person in my life. She has had a long and healthy life. She has accomplished many things in every aspect. She has also taught me many important things over the years. All these reasons helped me decide to write about her as my hero.

My grandma was born on May 21st. She was born in Wingdam and grew up in the Vancouver area. She now lives in Campbell River and is married to my grandpa Robert Baskin; who grew up in Saskatchewan. They had 4 kids; my mom, uncle Todd, uncle Murray and uncle Rob but I never knew my uncle Rob because he died before I was born. Her Mom looked after the house and kids while her dad worked as a carpenter in construction. She has 4 siblings, some of whom are still alive. She has 11 grandchildren who all love her so much. Even though she is retired now she is still an active participant in helping the community and volunteering, which keeps her very busy.

She was an educational assistant for about 35 years and enjoys helping kids. She made many friendships over the years and is known to be a very kind and honest person who they all respect. She lives on a big piece of property; she has lived there for a long time. She has 2 horses named Tessa and Contessa. She loves to sew, and has made costumes for Danettes for many years.

I admire my grandma because she is very loving and a strong person. She has an adventurous personality and a great sense of humour. She continues to teach me new things every time I see her, always quoting her favorite moralistic words of wisdom. She treats everyone fairly no matter who it is. For Halloween my grandma is always helping me make my costume and it always turns out really unique. My Grandma and Grandpa’s side of the family is so big that I haven’t even met all of my relatives, and sometimes I forget who is who. I enjoy having so many caring people in my family and always enjoy seeing them.

My grandma is very important to me and I like being able to act myself around her. As you have read you must have guessed she’s had a very long and thoughtful life. Her accomplishments over the years I think have never been forgotten, and her kindness towards others has not been overlooked. She has taught me many things I hope to use later in life. I hope these few paragraphs have shown you that she really is one of a kind.
