I would like to talk about the person I chose as my hero. I chose Bill Belsey, a teacher, author, son, brother, husband, father, and a friend. What is a hero? I think a hero is someone that you can count on, or has done something in their life that affects other people in good ways. Being a teacher, Mr. Belsey shares his love of learning with his students. He does this in a lot of different ways. So I would like to show you why I think he is a hero.

Bill Belsey was born in Ontario on Aug 16, 1958 to Pam and Stan Belsey. He has one sister named Sandy. His best friend is David Fitzpatrick. They grew up in the same neighbourhood, went to grade school and University together, and David was the best man at his wedding. Mr. Belsey went to Queens University in Kingston Ontario. After finishing school he married Helene Langevin. They have two children; a boy 19 named Alex (Anoee), and a girl 17 named Julia (Sila). I think that Mr. Belsey and David Fitzpatrick have been best friends for about 42 years! They must be really good friends.

When Mr. Belsey was in school, his favourite subjects were Language Arts- because he always loved a good story, and Social Studies- because he likes to learn about other people and about our world. He became a teacher because he believed that if you believe in kids, you believe in the future. He has been teaching for thirty years; 18 in the Arctic, and 12 in Alberta. He wants to share the love of learning in others. As my teacher, I can tell you that he is fair if you put in the effort. But he’s also really fun with us and teaches us lots of extra stuff if we like learning more and going further than we need to. He taught me lots of cool stuff on the computer so I joined the computer club at school.

Mr. Belsey has used computers and computer technology to teach a lot of kids. He’s won a lot of awards for teaching kids, parents, and other teachers how to use computers. He’s also won awards for using computers to bring kids together with old people so they could share with each other. Mostly though I think he’s used computers and the internet a lot for live Social Studies because he’s connected lots of kids from around the world. Mr Belsey has created Bullying.Org. to help kids deal with bullying. He also created Cyberbullying.ca. to help kids from being bullied on the internet.

I’ve learned a lot more about Mr. Belsey by doing this report. But I can also tell you that I have probably learned over one hundred things this year on the computer that I have never knew about before and he definitely knows how to talk to kids! Mr. Belsey is my hero because of all of the great things he’s done on Bullying.Org and Cyberbullying.ca , and because of all of the cool things he’s done to use computers and technology to teach.
