Becky Casey

by Tara from Mission Viejo

I never thought I would want to be a teacher until I had my mom, Becky, as my own teacher. I thought it was a boring job that people do just because they need money. That all changed when I had my mom as my teacher in 3rd grade. She was very exciting and a teacher who acted like she wanted to be at school with her students. I came to realize that I do like going to school because she had creative ways of teaching and she always makes people smile. She lets you know that she loves you and she wants you to do well. My mom changed the way I think about school. She thinks of many ways that help people learn and keep them interested. One being singing; she loves to sing and is very good at it. She would make up her own songs or she would find songs that would relate to the topic the students were learning in school. It makes it fun, but also gets them to memorize things quickly and easily. My mom has been teaching for 28 years, which gives her experience with kids and how to treat them.

A teacher is someone who provides an educational atmosphere for students. They help kids learn different subjects in school such as Math, Science, History, and English. They are supposed to teach kids things like how to spell and read. Without teachers people wouldn’t know much. Not only are teachers supposed to teach kids only about Math, Science, etc..., but also social and physical skills. They teach their students manners and how to be kind to others. Teachers are almost like the kids' parents. They take care of them and help them become a better individual. To become a teacher you must at least get your Bachelor’s degree or even higher, your Master’s degree. This requires 4 years of college at least. Teachers must be active and exciting to keep students paying attention.

When my mom was a child she was great at singing and that helps her today by singing songs to the students to help them memorize specific things. She was great at babysitting and parents always asked her to help them with their kids. That gave her experience with kids of all ages. It helped her know how to act with each kid by their age and/or attitude. My mom taught Sunday School for 7 years which also gave her practice and understanding. She later attended San Clemente High School and got good grades. Then she went to Westmont College in Santa Barbara and struggled a little bit during the first year, but did well when she got into her major (teaching). A main reason why she got started in the teaching occupation was because when she went to school, she hated it. She was always bored and nothing was fun. She wanted to make school a place where you learn in fun ways.

My mom’s job, a teacher, contributes to society by helping kids learn school subjects, good behavior, and social skills needed in life. Learning school subjects are important because knowing things like adding and subtracting help you get through life and give you common sense. Learning good behavior is important because it helps them be kind to others and treat people with respect. Social skills are also needed in life and teachers can help that happen. They help you be able to talk in front of a class with many students. My mom contributes to the society a lot and a quote that describes this is by Mother Teresa, “I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.” My mom makes a difference in this world and helps kids all around. One of her coworkers once said, “Your classroom makes me realize how unorganized I really am.”

Being an elementary teacher like my mom is what I would love to be when I grow up. I would have to be smart in all classes if I want to be a teacher so I know all the subjects in school and I can teach them. I would love to go to San Diego State University and major in teaching and try to get a Bachelor’s degree or maybe even get a Master’s degree, which would be great. I will maybe start being an aid or assistant teacher to get training and/or I will babysit my friend’s kids. Anything that involves taking care of kids will help me become a great teacher. Being a teacher is the job I would like when I am older and I hoping it will happen. Watching my mom teach is a great start for me to become successful. My mom is my hero.
