Beverly Cleary

"Children should learn that reading is pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school."

To honor Beverly Cleary, I did research about her in “Biography Today”. I did research on Beverly Cleary because I grew up listening to her stories in elementary school. This former librarian writes children books for a living. Maybe you have read some of her books.

Beverly (Bunn) Cleary was born April 12, 1916 in McMinnville, Oregon. She is the only child of Mable and Chester Bunn. She grew up in a thirteen room farm house with her mother and father. Growing up, she met her husband, Clarence Cleary, in college and ended up having twins, Malcom and Marriane. She says “You experience everything when you have twins!”

There were three schools that helped Beverly become who she is today. Beverly went to Fernwood Grammar School in Portland, Oregon. As school, also in Portland. After she graduated, she attended Chaffey Junior College in Ontario, California for about two years. Then she moved to the University of California at Berkeley where she received her bachelor’s degree in English. Who knew these schools would teach a worldwide bestselling children author!

Cleary became a hit! She has sold over 30 million books worldwide! In Japan and Europe, her book, Henry and Ribsy, have been converted over to a television show. Her books have been translated in 14 different languages. Maybe you have heard of or have watched the movie based on her book called Ramona and Beezus featuring Selena Gomez. Who knows what could come next from one of her books!

Beverly Cleary is such an inspiration to me and many other people I know! I hope you learned a little bit more about her growing up, her schools, And about her career and success! Beverly Cleary is an inspiration to me and I hope she is an inspiration to you to also.
