Hello, I am going to tell you some things about Bill Gates and why he is my hero. In this brief essay I will mention some key things that Gates has done in his life that not only benefited others but helped himself as well. First, I will discuss where and when he was born. Secondly, I will go on to where he joined college, then tell you a small portion of what he did and created. Thirdly, I will tell you how he made a big impact on the world and what we make of it today. Then last, but not least, I will tell you how he has inspired me.
William Henry Gates III was born October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. When he was 13, he began programming computers. Later on in his life, he joined Harvard University where he met Steve Ballmer (now Chief Executive officer of Microsoft). Still an undergraduate at Harvard, Bill created a programming language BASIC for the MITS Altair microcomputer. Gates and Paul Allen also made a little company called Traf-O-Data and sold it to the city of Seattle to count traffic. In 1975, before graduation, Gates left Harvard to go create the Microsoft business with his good friend Paul Allen. Their business is a huge success with their intense business deals. Here's an example: Bill negotiated with IBM to let his company retain the license rights to the MS-DOS operating system that IBM had to have with their personal computer (PC). Bill made a fortune from the licensing of MS-DOS. On November 10, 1983, in New York City at the Plaza Hotel, the Microsoft Corporation finally announced the new and wonderful Microsoft Windows Operating System (OS).

Gates has shaped and created the computing world as we know it today. He has created a revolutionary industry in computers and is now the richest man in the world. Having not created that software and the operating system that we work on and use, where would we be in this world? What things would be going on without the Microsoft Windows operating system? Bill and his wife Melinda have endowed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with more than $28.8 billion (as of January 2005) to help and support initiative philanthropists in areas of global health and learning. Some information that I have obtained came from: http://inventors.about.com/od/gstartinventors/a/Bill_Gates.htm On January 1, of 1994, he married Melinda French Gates, and they now have three children and a happy family.
The following are ways that Gates has inspired me. For example: when I was around 9-10 years old, I got my first computer from my dad’s old office building that had an old IBM Aptiva personal computer. I hooked it up and got it running, and it was the coolest thing I ever saw. The old Windows 95 boot logo and the startup sound was beautiful. After that wonderful experience, I started to collect computers and really have fun with them. When I was 12, I was determined to learn DOS, so I taught myself how to do it. Then I programmed my first computer a year later. Later I created my own operating system (nothing special), but it was like Windows 1.02; I made improvements to it. I also created a program called “The Easy Periodic Table”: it was a simple batch program that had every single element in the periodic table. Next, I built my first gaming computer. I was very proud of myself but I realized that anyone can do that and it’s not so difficult after all. Now my friend Ivan Mattie and I are thinking of creating a business called "Hex Programming". The whole concept of that is to create software for computers, the Sony PSP, and iPods and many other devices that are unique and yet fun to use. We want to teach people the basics of computer programming and how it's not at all hard to learn and do.

In the end Bill Gates has created some wonderful things in the world and really helped us get along in life. Now you know what Bill Gates has done and created. But what I must say, is that without computers this world would not have the great advantages that we have as of now, for example: laptops, cell phones, television systems, mp3 players, PSPs, Email, and many other things.
