Bill Gates

by Brent from Madisonville

It is fine to celebrate success, but more important to heed the lessons of failure.- Bill Gates

What comes to your mind when you hear the word "hero"? Maybe Superman? Batman? Well, a hero does not have to have x-ray vision or tiny little grenades shaped like bats. They just need to be brave, brainy, and kind.

My hero is Bill Gates. He invented Microsoft, Xbox , and tons of other cool stuff. He was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1955. He has two sisters---an older one named Kristi and a younger one named Libby. Early in life, Gates's parents had a law career in mind for him. Bill attended a Congregational Church when he was young. His family encouraged competition to Bill. He played all sorts of games like hearts, pickle ball, or swimming to the dock. There were consequences for both winning and losing. If you won, you would get a reward. If you lost, you would have a penalty.

At 13, he enrolled in Lakeside School, an exclusive preparatory school. During eighth grade, the mothers' club used school proceeds from his school's rummage sale to buy a new Teletype Model 33 ASR and computer block for the students at his school.  Bill had an interest in programming the GE system in basic. Gates was excited by the machine as he stated, "There is just something neat about that machine." It would always execute each code perfectly. Bill's first code program was a version of tic-tac-toe.

Later, in 1973, he graduated from Lakeside. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on his SAT's (which is pretty good !!) Then in the fall of 1973, he enrolled at Harvard and met Steve Ballmer, who would later become CEO of Microsoft. In his sophomore year, Gates invented an algorithm using Pancake Sorting as a solution to unsolved problems. Gates's solution held the record for 30 years, until he was beaten by 1%. Poor guy, but he had bigger problems at hand. He didn't have a definite study plan! He definitely spent a lot of time on computers. Later, he dropped out of Harvard because Paul Allen and Bill had plans to start a company.

Eventually, after reading a magazine, Bill contacted Micro Technology and Telemetry Systems. Bill told them that he and some friends had been programming on BASIC. Actually, they did not have an Altair and were just  trying to rank in MITS interest. Ed Roberts, president of MITS, planned to meet for a demonstration. Happily, the demo was a success and was distributed as Altair BASIC. His friend Paul Allen, was hired for MITS, so Gates started working with Paul at MITS. They named their partnership  "Micro-Soft," Then, the next thing you know, they dropped the hyphen and became Microsoft. Yeah, that's how it happened---the birth of Microsoft.

Then, on January 1, 1994, Bill got married to Melinda French. They have three kids: two girls and one boy. The girls names are Jennifer Katherine and Phoebe Adele, while the son is named Rory John. I would describe his house, but he has way too much stuff to mention. Bill Gates is my hero. Who is yours?
