Bethany Hamilton

My hero is Bethany Hamilton. She started surfing when she was 4 or 5 years old. At the age of 13, a 14-foot tiger shark bit Bethany's arm off while she was surfing on the island of Kauai. She lost over 60% of her blood. After she recovered, Bethany competed in surf meets, even though she only had one arm.

Bethany is my hero because she is confident. One example how Bethany showed confidence is when tried she hard to get back in the water after the shark attack. She also showed confidence is when she started competing again in surfing.

The second reason why Bethany's my hero is she persisted. Bethany showed persistence by working hard to surf again after her injury. She got better at surfing with only one arm.

Bethany is my hero because she was able to think flexibly. Bethany showed that by finding a way to surf again with only one arm. She needed to think how could she make it easer for her to surf. Bethany attached a small rope to her board to help her dive.

Bethany had hard times throughout her life. But she had to overcome her injury and fear. Some day I want to be like her.
