Bethany Hamilton was like many girls that grew-up in Hawaii, she surfed from a young age and became very talented in the sport. At age 13, Hamilton had already entered several surfing competitions and was becoming as one the best surfers in the United States tragedy struck. Hamilton grew up in Hawaii to Thomas and Cherlyn Hamilton, who loved to surf and passed their love for surfing to their daughter. "Her parents were natives of New Jersey who moved to Hawaii partly to surf." Despite losing her arm to a shark attack, Bethany Hamilton didn't throw in the towel when her life was turned on its head, instead she quickly began to learn to surf again so she could continue to do what she loves. Bethany Hamilton has pride in what she does and so to continue to be respected as a strong, hard working and determined surfer, she doesn't quit when her situation is difficult but instead works harder to be able to surf. She has pride in what she does and won't let her situation control how she lives her life. Bethany Hamilton shows she is determined through showing the world she will never give up even when her situation is difficult so can can continue to do what she loves.
Bethany Hamilton has been able to accept and prosper in her situation reaching more people with one arm than she could with two, she has been able to inspire and encourage others to live their dreams. "In 2013, Bethany co-hosted a weekend retreat with FOBH called, Beautifully Flawed. The weekend was aimed at inspiring and encouraging young women who have suffered the loss of a limb." (Hamilton, Bethany) Through the Friends of Bethany outreach, Bethany Hamilton has been able to talk with young adults and teenage girl amputees through a weekend retreat, and show them they are beautiful no matter how they look to others. "Bethany is involved in numerous charitable efforts, including her own foundation Friends of Bethany, which supports shark attack survivors, amputees, and serves to inspire others through her life story." (Hamilton, Bethany) Through organizations she has been able to help others, and through "Friends of Bethany" she has been able to reach out to other amputees and show them how beautiful they are. Through her fame she has been able to bring aid to causes such as helping amputee victims. Bethany Hamilton Inspires others through helping others through charities and organizations.
Bethany Hamilton has inspired many through her story of determination and bravery and inspires others to never give up on their dreams and to show how beautiful everyone is. Hamilton has written a book which has been created into a major motion picture, appeared on television shows, and has spoken to thousands of people but what makes Bethany Hamilton a true hero is her ability to never give in and come back fighting harder. Bethany Hamilton once said, "Life is a lot like surfing. When you get caught in the impact zone, you've got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave."
