Bob Marley's full name |
"No power in society, no hardship in your condition can depress you, keep you down, in knowledge, power, virtue, influence, but by your own consent" (William Ellery Channing). Bob Marley had a lot of hardship but instead of letting it keep him down he rose out of it. He was born "Nesta Robert Marley on February 6, 1945 in St. Ann, Jamaica. After Marley's father died in 1955, young Robert spent his child being shuffled between the homes of his grandfather, his aunt, and his mother Cedella." (Bob Marley). "By 1959, Marley had been taking singing lessons, practicing his musicianship on the guitar and performing in local talent shows" (Bob Marley). "He was an amazing musician and very religious" (Steffens, Roger). The great reggae musician is truly an inspiration because he is multi talented, overcame hardship and has revolutionary lyrics.
Bob Marley is a hero because he is multi-talented. He wrote many songs that nobody will forget. "Marley's melodies will be as prevalent as those of any song writer who has ever lived. "No Women No Cry" will still wipe away the tears from a widows face; "Exodus" will still arouse the warrior; "Redemption Song" will still be a rallying cry for emancipation from all tyrannies, physical and spiritual; "Waiting in Vain" will still seduce; and "One Love" will be the international anthem of a coffee-colored humanity living in unity, in a world beyond borders, beyond beliefs, where everyone has learned at last to get together and feel all right" (Steffens Roger). Writing songs that have many genres and speaks to many people's hearts make that person multi-talented. A hero can see things that are happening to many different people and relate to their pain and suffering. Marley is a multi-talented hero because he sees others pain and the injustice that they have to endure and exposes it in a way that touches people's hearts. A multi talented person is able to see inspiration around them. "Marley's first authentically reggae songs drew on Caribbean myths, ghetto scenes, Old Testament verses, and radical sentiments" ("Bob Marley." Encyclopedia of World Biography). It takes a multi talented person to take information from different places and write it into reggae music which many people love to this day. It is obvious that he has talents beyond belief.

Bob Marley (customizemyi.com/) |
Bob Marley had obstacles in his life that would cause other people to give up on their dreams but Bob overcame hardship and ended up on top. Most teenagers would give up if they were left homeless. " In 1962, Marley's mother remarried and relocated to America. Left homeless at 18 years of age, Marley began to frequent squatters' camps and learn more about Rastafarian religion, a form vested in contemplative spirituality, philosophy, and asceticism" (Bob Marley). At first Bob Marley was homeless but started focusing on the Rastafarian religion which led him to his career. Political views are generally shaped in families. "His resentment against authority clearly dates from his non-communication with his white father and the refusal by the family's building company to subsidies him" (Marley movie). People are able to see injustices when they have to live with them. Bob Marley learned about social injustice through his relationship or lack of relationship with his parents. He refused money from his father and didn't want anything to do with him. This became an obstacle because he was relying only on himself to survive and these injustices among other social injustice are seen in Marley's music. Bob went through a lot in his life and overcame it all to become a well known singer who speaks out against social injustice which is a characteristic of a hero.
To stand up against social injustice is revolutionary and a characteristic of a hero. He was singing with the purpose to change the social injustice in his country. "In the 1960s, Marley became a key promoter of what was known as "Rude Boy" music, a form of Jamaican music that spread an anti-racist, anti-colonial, revolutionary message" (Bob Marley. "St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture). Bob's music spread to other countries that were dealing with the need for change that is revolutionary. It takes great courage to speak out against injustice which makes Marley a hero. Other singers sing for fame but Bob Marley sang for purpose. "In 1975, Marley released the now classic Natty Dread album, which was inspired by the political warfare that threatened Jamaica in early 1974. The album established Marley as a preeminent moral authority and a political visionary alongside peers like John Lennon" (Bob Marley. "St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture). He wrote songs to help people no matter how much danger he was in. Like John Lennon singing against the injustice in America, Bob sang against the injustice in Jamaica making him a revolutionary song writer and hero. Bob Marley was in a lot of danger but that didn't matter to him. He just wanted to help people.
