Billy D. Mays

by Carter from Mission Viejo

“When I'm up against a wall, that's when Billy Mays performs best.”

I first came across my hero as I was watching a show on Discovery Channel called “Pitchmen”. The show was about two men named Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan. Although both were very talented men, Billy Mays’s booming voice really caught my attention. It seemed he could sell any product he really believed in. His career as pitchmen (a person who pitches a product either they invented or another did) was very interesting. It was full of hard work and arguing, but also laughter and jokes.

Taking a closer look at what being a pitchman is all about can really give you idea of what it takes to pull it off. A pitchman is someone that creates a sales pitch. Billy Mays puts his pitch into the form of an infomercial. An infomercial is like a regular commercial except it contains more information about the product, like how much it costs, and sometimes even a way to contact and buy the product over the phone or through the internet. Becoming a pitchman doesn’t really require anything, but it is recommended to have a college major in some form of business. On average a pitchman makes a salary of $48.09 an hour.

When Billy Mays was in high school he was a linebacker for the football team. When Billy was old enough he started working for his dad’s trash hauling business and sometimes he would fix and sell some of the garbage which showed he could really sell anything. Billy Mays continued with his strengths and became an incredible salesman. As Billy Mays once said “You know what, rip me off once, shame on me. But twice? I'm coming after you and taking back what's mine.” That really shows his attitude and intellect about what he does.

Billy Mays sold many products that helped the everyday life of some people. Since people were so clumsy and spilled wine, soda, salsa, etc on themselves. The product formally as OxiClean detergent helped people fix their mistakes. Another product known as Mighty Putty was “able to stick to any surface” which helped people fix things around the house. “Big City Sliders” allowed people to make the perfectly grilled burgers in a step by step process. “Jupiter Jack” is an easy way to stay hands free while driving. Not only did he help the people using the products, he also help the creators sell the products.

My goals as person right now is to help people and the world in any way I can. My high school is to graduate and later go to Cal State Fullerton and major in business. Then as a career I would rather go into to the marketing business. To achieve these goals I would want to try to be more active in high school like giving speeches or performing in front of kids. I will also need to get good enough grades to go to college and be a successful businessman.
