Brent Naherny

by Kathryn from Castle Rock

When you hear the word "hero," you might think of Spider Man flying over the city buildings, or think of Wonder Woman fighting off villains and saving people who are in trouble. But heroes don't have to have super powers, or have anything particularly special about them. Heroes don't have to be people that are made up. They are all around us, in the every-day-world. We see them at work, at the market, anywhere.

They don't have to have super powers to qualify as a hero. In fact, there are no specific standards that make a hero; it's about the way people live their lives, their goals and accomplishments, and how they impact other peoples' lives.

My hero is my dad, Brent Naherny. He has always been there for me whenever I have needed him. Being my dad isn't the only thing that makes him my hero; it's how he impacts my life.

Brent Naherny is an amazing father and worker. He works at Anadarko Petroleum and Engineering. He is a hard-working man who influences people in positive ways. When people in his office need help, they call him to ask for it. Brent never passes up the opportunity to help, even when he is dealing with his own problems.

He helps me every day, too. When I need help with my homework, he always helps me, and never just "gives up" on me. Since my dad was a math tutor for one of his friend's daughters, he is always an amazing math "teacher" for me at home. He can explain almost any problem, and solve almost any question at hand.

My father will never let you down, and he always keeps his promise. Brent has a serious side, but an even more hilarious side. One day, I checked my email, and there was an email from my dad. It had a photo in it (if my dad finds something funny, he always sends his friends and me a picture of it) I opened it up, and there was a picture in it. On the picture was a quote, with a small unicorn in the corner. The quote was hilarious: "Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn. Then always be a unicorn." After reading that quote, I burst out into laughter.

When I asked my dad about some problems I was having with my friends, he said the first part of the quote that he had sent me in the email. "Always be yourself." When he told me that, I said that I would always be myself. Whenever I look back on that email, I still laugh.

He lives his life in ecstasy and euphoria, and lives every second of his life to the fullest. He always tries to impact peoples' lives positively by helping them at any time of crisis. Sure, my dad can't fly, or use his eyes to blast a hole in a wall, or run at the speed of light. But he is my hero, my Number One Hero, and will forever be that to me.
