Barack Obama

by Rylan from DuBois

"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."

“We need to change”. That was a famous four word quote from the one and only Barack Obama. This quote means that our country will not move forward unless we make changes in our society for the greater good. Obama is one of the most important people in our world right now. That is why I chose him for my “Biography Today” project.

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. In 1967 Barack and his mom moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, an island in Southeast Asia. Obama also moved to New York City in 1981 due to a college transfer for Columbia University. Obama’s mom was Stanley Dunham and his dad was Barack Obama Sr. Barack Obama is married to Michelle (Robinson)Obama. They got married in 1992 and have two daughters, Natasha and Malia Ann.

Obama first attended public school in Jakarta, but when he was ten, he was sent to Hawaii to live with his grandparents so he could get an American education. In Honolulu he attended Punahou Academy and received his high school diploma in 1979. Later that year, Obama enrolled in a college in California called Occidental College, where he studied economics, social issues, and law. In 1988 Obama entered Harvard to further his education.

Barack Obama has written two books, these are: Dreams from my Father, 1995 and The Audacity of Hope: Thought on Reclaiming the American Dream, 2006. Obama was also a constitutional law teacher at the University of Chicago. Obama ran for a spot in the Illinois state legislature of the Democratic Party in 1996 and won the election. When Obama became senator, he was the only African American serving in the Senate, and the third in the last one hundred years, and the fifth in USA history. Barack Obama also ran for president in 2008 and won, making him the first African American president ever in the USA.

Obama has also won numerous awards over the years. In 2004, Obama got an award for being one of the fifty most intriguing Blacks of 2004. In 2005, Obama won a Grammy award for Best Spoken Word, an Image award, a Freedom award, and an award for being one of the one hundred most influential people of 2005. These are some of the many reasons why Barack Obama is my hero.
