Barack Obama

by Lousie from Williamsville

Barack Obama is a hero to me. Now, I know you are probably wondering why. If you are wondering why, read what I have wrote and you will find out. Obama is now the president of the United States. However, he wasn't always a president. He had to work hard, go to many schools and understand what people need and want in order to become the president of the U.S.A. He didn't even let being African American stop him from fulfilling his dreams. Now that is a hero!

Barack Obama had an interesting background. His parents, Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr; divorced when Barack Obama Jr. was two. It was quite hard for his mother to raise him. Therefore, his mother married a man named Lolo Soetoro. Lolo Soetoro was from Indonesia. Barack Obama and his mother moved to Indonesia with Mr. Soetoro. Barack Obama saw many people experiencing poverty. His mother later gave birth to Maya, Barack Obama's half-sister. Later on, Ann Dunham taught Obama many things about his African American heritage. She taught him to be proud of being African American. However, Obama's feelings about himself changed after his mother divorced from Mr. Soetoro. Obama was sent to Hawaii after four years of living in Indonesia to live with his grandparents. In Hawaii, Obama went to Punahou Academy, an elite prep school. There, many children made fun of Barack Obama's foreign name. They also made fun of the fact that he was African American. Obama had a really hard time trying to fit in. Obama also had a tense time when he met his first father for the first time. His father told him to stop playing and to work more. His father also talked to Barack Obama Jr.'s class about how he had to work really hard to be able to succeed in life. He told them about how Kenyans had to struggle to be free. Barack Obama thought the children in his class would also make fun of his father because of the accent he had. However, they did not. They actually were impressed by what his father had talked about. Later on in his life, Barack Obama went to Occidental College and to Columbia University. As you can see, Obama had a very important background.

Barack Obama went through many obstacles to get where he is today. First of all, he had divorced parents. He was also African American, which made it hard for him to enjoy going to school because many kids would make fun of him. Also, it was a very tense time when he met his father. His father didn't always have the same impression as him about watching TV. However, the real reason that the time was tense when Obama met his father is because he had never really gotten the time to know his father before. Another challenge Obama had to face was being jobless. At one point, Obama could not find a good job. He was passing out flyers and in six months, he was basically broke. He would eat soup from a can. Obama also wanted to become a senator of the state of Illinois. There were many people who also wanted that spot. It was a challenge to defeat the opponents. It was also an even bigger challenge to try to defeat the people who wanted to become the president of the U.S.A. Obama may have become our president; however; he still had many challenges after he was elected president. People sometimes didn't agree on the laws he proposed. Barack Obama did not let challenges stop him from becoming the president of the U.S.A. That is another reason why he is a hero. In conclusion, Obama went through many obstacles throughout his lifetime.

Barack Obama had a lot of accomplishments during his life. He also made lots things to help communities around the U.S. Obama helped Altgeld Gardens in Chicago get rid of asbestos. Asbestos is a cancer causing a material that was in the apartments of Altgeld Gardens. He likewise helped poor communities as a community organizer. He also graduated Harvard Law School in order to understand the law and help others. In the meantime, Obama wrote and published a memoir about his father called Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. Obama became president in order to help people find jobs. He has tried to end our bad economy. He became the president of the Harvard Law Review, the first African American one. He also became a senator of the state of Illinois In addition, he became the director of the Illinois Project Vote and as we all know, he is also the president of the United States of America. As the president, he created the Lugar-Obama Act with Richard Lugar. This act was created in order to reduce the amount of weapons in foreign countries. Obama definitely had a lot of accomplishments.

Barack Obama was recognized for some things. First of all, he was recognized for being the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. Obama was also the director of the Illinois Project Vote. Obama also appeared in the Crain's magazine list of "40 of 40 Outstanding Young Leaders in Chicago, Illinois." He was also the first African American president of the United States of America! He was also recognized for trying to reduce harmful emissions from factories, and he gave factories the opportunity to switch to cleaner air alternatives such as solar power. Obama was also recognized for understanding the need for lower costs for getting into college. He believed that every child should get wholesome education no matter how poor. Obama always tries his best to help our country! He was recognized for many things.

Obama has three very important character traits. The first one is that he is caring. He always cared about the poor and helped them live a better life. Like I have said before, Barack Obama was once a community organizer. His second trait is that he is a very determined person. He became the president of the United States even though he was African American. Not even political experts would have ever anticipated that an African American man would become the president. His third trait is being serious. Our president did not spend a lot of time enjoying the luxury of the White House. He got right to work trying to solve the problem with the bad economy. Obama is also a hero because of his character traits.

There is one very important lesson that I think every child and young adult can learn from Barack Obama. That lesson is that you can succeed even if you are different. I know I have mentioned that Obama became the president even though was African American; however, that is something very important. It sets a very good example for people. Tyreese Holmes, a citizen, even said that now, the sky is the limit for his sons because Obama demonstrated that you can do anything if you are determined. I think that is something everyone needs to know. Barack Obama really is a hero because he demonstrated that to us, because of his character traits and because of the challenges he had to face.
