Ben Underwood

Ben Underwood was a young boy who was diagnosed with retinal cancer at the age of two. He had both of his eyes removed and learned how to use sounds to hear. Ben used echolocation that dolphins, bats and other mammals use they use clicking noises or squeals to understand the things that are around them. Ben would go around making clicking noises and could tell where he was and what was around him. I think Ben Underwood is a Hero because he would inspire many people with a disability of any kind. He has proven that the impossible can be done and you can live with a disability. If I had a disability I would be very inspired by Ben to do my best to live with my disability and find new ways to live with it.

Ben was born and raised in California. Ben Underwood is a very inspirational young boy who lived without being able to see with his eyes but seeing with his ears. He used echolocation the same as dolphins. He could tell where he was and what was around him because he knew where things were and what they were because of the sound that bounced off them. Ben could tell things apart easily after time. Ben had his eyes removed at the age of two and he taught himself echolocation. He played sports of all sorts and was like a regular kid besides his sight.

Ben was born in Riverside California on January 26th of 1992. He was a very healthy baby, the only thing that was different about him was that sometimes he would have a glow in his eye if it was caught in certain light. When Ben's sight stopped working he never complained about it and nobody could tell that he could not see he acted normal says his mother Aquanetta. Aquanetta took him to a doctor which then he was referred to a eye doctor and they looked at all the possibilities of things that could turn this young boys eyes white. They realized it was cancer, they had to remove the right eye then shortly after had to remove his left eye as well because the cancer had taken over his eyes. Ben’s brother Derius helped him learn how to dress himself properly and his brother always described the places that they were so Ben would know. Ben could play video games, riding a bike, skate, and climb trees and so on. He would click all the time but he knew where he was and what was around him. Ben taught himself how to speak Japanese and was very inspirational to everyone. Ben passed away on January 19th 2009.

Ben is my hero because he is very inspirational. I wish that everyone would know about Ben Underwood because they would be inspired to do anything. Whenever you feel you’re not able to do something think about Ben he had no eyes at all but yet could do everything any seeing person could. Ben proves that nothing is impossible and that even when terrible things happen to us you can find a way to live with it. Ben was and still is a worldwide icon and amazed millions of people.

My conclusion of this essay is to say that everyone should learn from Ben. He is an inspirational person and has proven that you can see without your eyes. I imagine if I were blind I would be extremely inspired by Ben because he would give you courage to not stop doing things you love but to find different ways to do them.
