Bethany Hamilton was born February 8, 1990 in North Shore, Kauai. She has a mom and a dad, and two brothers named Timmy and Noah. She also has a dog-named Ginger. When Bethany was four years old, she learned how to surf. Amazing, right? We’re talking “Little Princess of the Waves,” She also entered a surf contest at eight years of age and won. Now that deserves a standing ovation! Unfortunately, when Bethany was just thirteen years old, a SHARK attacked her. Her arm was bitten off in the attack. Because of her positive attitude and hard work, she recovered, she went out and got back in shape, ready to surf again.

Due to her accident, Bethany went through many hardships and struggles. After she was attacked, she had to learn how to put on clothes with only one arm. There were also a lot of things that she couldn’t do anymore. She also had to learn how to surf with only one arm, which really affected her balance.

After much rehabilitation, she got back on her board after the attack. She still surfs today with only one arm. Bethany Hamilton had many acts of courage. When the shark attacked her, she stayed calm and focused. She also acted very maturely when she found out that she needed surgery. After the attack, she even went surfing where she had been attacked.

Bethany is still alive today. She came in second place in the World Junior Championship. A movie about her story is starting production in Spring 2009. She entered the Volcum Surf Contest on Oahu. I learned from Bethany’s life that you should never let fear keep you from doing what you love. That’s all for now, see you later.
