Blackie The Horse

Blackie was born in 1926 in Kansas. He was a black horse and he loved to stand still. Later a cowboy came to Blackie and said...Blackie you are all I need, a standing still horse to round up bulls. With a lot of apples, carrots, and sugar he finally went. They went to Salinas California. Blackie was perfect. After he retired he was offered a job in Yosemite. He had to just stand still and tourists would take pictures of him and a ranger. Finally a vet had to look at Blackie. He said he had too big of a swayback. This meant nobody could sit on him anymore. When Blackie was 12, an oyster fisher named Anthony Connell came and bought him. They traveled across the Golden Gate Bridge and they went to a small place called Tiburon. Then Blackie kept standing still in his spot. Lots of people liked to come by and feed him apples, carrots, and sugar. Blackie died in his sleep at 40 years old on Feb. 27th, 1966. Later in 1995 Tiburon made a statue of Blackie as their mascot and to honor Blackie for standing up for his community.

My hero is Blackie the horse that stood still. Why I chose Blackie as my hero is because he stood up for Tiburon and his pasture. He shows that animals can be smart, too. He didn't want any change to Tiburon. His pasture was saved from becoming a big shopping mall because people enjoyed seeing Blackie standing by the bay. Instead we have Blackie's pasture where people can walk, run, and ride bikes. Blackie rocks!
