Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono of the worldwide sensational band U2, is much more than a rock and roll singer. His music has inspired millions and his activist work has saved thousands of lives.

Born in Dublin, Ireland in early May of 1960, he was belligerent and would often find himself in trouble. However, he was also curious about the world and very creative. He excelled in the arts in school, and these talents would lead him, unknowingly, to his big break. It came in the form of an ad. A group of musicians looking to form a band needed a singer. Bono answered the ad and would never join another band again.

This amateur group, who would first call themselves “Feedback” and later “The Hype,” would, within four years, be touring the world playing hundreds of shows in many different countries. Bono’s poetic lyrics and onstage antics would send the four Irish rockers to the top of the charts. Music isn’t the only thing in Paul’s life, though.

He is very involved in our world, promoting causes such as stopping the AIDS epidemic in Africa and preventing poverty in third world countries. He feels it’s his duty and the right thing to do. A man in his position can make a change. He was even nominated to be president of the World Bank in 2004!

Not only has U2 been at the top of the charts for over 25 years now, they also changed the face of rock and roll. With Bono as their front man, U2 records will be playing long after they’ve stopped recording music.

Bono is my hero because his creativity brought him fame and fortune but he hasn’t forgotten where he came from. He gives his time and money back to the world as he continues to rock it. I greatly respect him.
