George Howard Brett

by Matt from Kansas

What do you think of when you hear the word “leader”? I think that a leader should be someone that you can look up to; someone that leads you in the right direction; someone who never gives up no matter what the circumstances. They are always thinking about other people, not just themselves.

George Howard Brett was born on May 15, 1953, in Glen Dale, West Virginia. His family grew up with the sport of baseball. His brother, Ken, was a World Series pitcher in 1967. George Brett says that he was the inspiration that motivated him to play baseball. George played for the KC Royals his entire career. He was number 5 and was loved by many. He had his first chance at the World Series in 1980, but lost to the Phillies after six games. This did not discourage him, though. He not only led the Royals to the playoffs five years later, but also led them to their first and only World Series title.

George Brett shows many qualities that a hero should have. He’s not only a leader, but also a teammate. He works with everyone and treats him or her as if they were the heroes. He is a great role model for anyone dreaming of playing in the World Series. He influences so many people in so many different ways. He has helped raise over 1.9 million dollars for the ALS to help find a cure for ALS patients. George Brett is an amazing person. He could have bought a huge mansion, started a really good company, or other numerous things with that money, but instead, he decided to give it all to the community.

George Howard Brett was a gift to the KC Royals: being a leader and showing them the way to the World Series and showing them how to win. Such a person in our lifetime is rare. We need to recognize them when they come, and I am proud to honor George Brett, as my leader, and my hero.
