Cole Hamels

Intro

Cole Hamels was born on Dec 27, 1983. Cole Hamels has been baseball player for the Philadelphia Phillies (As most people know) for 7 years. He is 6' 3". He has 2 children, Caleb Michael Hamels born on October 9, 2009 , and Braxton Grady Hamels born on October 24, 2011.

Childhood

Colbert Michael Hamels was born on Dec 27, 1983 in San Diego, California. His parents were Amanda & Gary Hamels. He is the oldest of three siblings, with a sister named Jillian & a brother named Mitchell. It was Cole's father who introduced him to soccer & baseball both of which he excelled in. During this time his baseball heroes were Tony Gwynn & Ken Griffy Jr. & his soccer heroes were Alexie Lalas & Colby Jones. When he was 10 he joined a traveling soccer team which played competitively throughout Southern California. It was then also then that he joined an AAU baseball team and traveled through San Diego to compete in local tournaments. During the time he played center field and pitched.

High School

For high school he had attended Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS). It was in high school when he decided he wanted to pursue baseball, but more importantly pitching. The summer before his junior year in high school he broke his left humerus while pitching. That specific injury has only happened to two other professional pitchers and no one had ever come back from at the time.

Major Accomplishments and Obstacles in Life

Because of this he sought after the doctor for the San Diego Padres, Dr. Jan Froenick to repair the injury, hoping he would be able to play again. Later he rehabbed with Tom House and the National Pitchers Association. He then made a healthy comeback for his senior year of high school.

When he broke his arm, some teams who were going to draft him lost interest. But he still got drafted by the Phillies in 2002. He began his professional pitching career in 2003 in the minors. In the 2006 minors season he had pitched 35 games and struck out 273 batters. He finally got put on the Phillies in 2007. His career high for strikeouts in the majors is 211.

Hero Traits

Some traits he has that makes me think he is a hero is that he always focuses on his pitching when he needed to. He is also dedicated because he has been playing Baseball for most of his life. Also he is loyal because his entire major league career he has been playing with the Phillies.

Personal Connection

I chose Cole Hamels for this project because I have always liked baseball and the Phillies. He always seemed to work hard even when he was tired. And the fact that he had only started when he was 6 or 7 is amazing. He is also always trying to help people, he has 6 charities. Those are the reasons I chose Cole Hamels as my hero.
