Carla Sanchez

by Lorena from Hawthorne

Carla Sanchez is way more than mother; she is also a friend, a nurse, a guidance counselor and a great chef. She has taught me many things that I realized are essential to live a good life.

When she was younger, Carla's mother had to raise five children on her own. Carla lived in Mexico until she was seven years old. Life was very hard because of the amount of income that was being brought in. Only one thing was certain; Carla and her family would have to come to America in order to make a living. Well, at first, there wasn't much difference between Mexico and here. It was still hard to get food on the table, as well as other much needed supplies. Carla also had to risk being in danger every day because the area she lived in was full of gang members.

Carla had her first child when she was seventeen years old. From that moment on she knew that her life would change for the better. She began to look for a job so that her children would not have to struggle as she did. However, she believed that she wouldn't get hired until all of us were able to take care of ourselves for a few hours. She encouraged us to play sports and to be studious. When I was seven, she greatly pushed me to read because she didn't want me to struggle in English as she once did.

All my life she has been there for my family: when my little brother had an ulcer and sprained his leg and when my older brother lost his appendix. Now that my brothers and I are older, she has begun to work in party decorations. Nevertheless, she makes sure that there is something that we can eat while she is away. One of her future dreams is to purchase a house so that we can all live in it. Admittedly, we don't always get along well but she is always forgiving and doesn't hold grudges. I know that if I am ever in a problem, I can count on her to help me out of it.
