Chesly B. Sullenberger

On January 23, 1951 Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger was born in Grayson County, Texas, but nobody knew that one day he would save 155 lives from a plane crash.

It was January 15, 2009. Flight 1549 was ready for take off with no problems and 155 people on board. It was just up to fate to decide whether this plane would make it or not.

Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III took off and at about 2700,in 1 minute and thirty seven seconds, hit a flock of geese. This is when both engines failed most likely because of geese flying into them. Captain Sullenberger had to decide whether to go back to the Teterboro Airport in New Jersey or to land in the Hudson River. He decided to land in the Hudson River because of the low thrust, caused by the engine failure, and it would take too long to get there.

So Sullenberger started to descend to the Hudson warning the passengers about the rough descent that was going to have to happen. When Flight 1549 descended into the Hudson, every passenger exited immediately and Captain Sullenberger went back twice to make sure everyone was out of the plane. Rescue boats came and the passengers were put on them and safely brought to shore where some were taken to the hospital to check for hypothermia.

The reason Captain Sullenberger is my hero is because he saved lives that could have been lost easily if he had made the wrong move or decided to fly the airplane back to the airport. He also made me realize that whenever you do something you do something you're always taking a risk, putting yourself in fate's hands. But it should always be for something you love.
