My hero is a retired basketball player who used to own a key role in two championships with the Boston Celtics. He is now working in radio broadcasting with Sean Grande in WRKO AM in Boston. His name is Cedric Bryan Maxwell and is now living in Weston, Massachusetts. He is also nicknamed “Cornbread”, thanks to his friend. They went to watch “Cornbread, Earl and Me”, and his friend thought that the main character and Cedric were similar. That is where his nickname began. Cedric was born on November 21, 1955, in Kinston, North Carolina. Other than being called “Cornbread”, he is also known as a star from the UNC Charlotte 49ners. He wore #33 in his jersey and he was ranked 6th all time in the category of points scored. In his basketball career, he played from 1977-1988 with three teams.

His first NBA team was the Boston Celtics from 1977-1985. He stayed with the Boston Celtics longer than the two other teams. After being traded on September 6, 1985, he also was with the Los Angeles Clippers from 1985-1986. His last team was the Houston Rockets from 1986-1988. At the end of Cedric’s eleven seasons with his three teams he then retired. He had a total of 5261 rebounds and 10465 points scored. In his second season with the Boston Celtics, Cedric had a great impact. He set the stage of an NBA dynasty, with his potential, and additional help and support form others. The difference from him and any other basketball players were his moves anywhere near the basket on the basketball court. He had been faking defenders, making high shots, and got many points for his team.

I chose a basketball player for two reasons. One, basketball is the hardest sport for me to learn and play. I wanted to understand more about the sport and the people who chose to do that as their career. I also wanted to learn more about the highlights and what excitement drives people to enjoy watching, or even playing basketball with their friends. I couldn’t seem to understand it, so I wanted to find out about it. I also chose Cedric Maxwell for two reasons. While researching, I saw that most people don’t know very much about Cedric Maxwell. Most people care about the basketball stars today, and some people like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, or any other famous basketball players. I wanted to learn about a basketball star that not many people would know about. He also taught me that I shouldn’t give up and I should give my best in practice and give my best effort. He showed me this because even though he played for three teams, he didn’t give up until the very end when he decided to retire and work in radio broadcasting. I will work hard and give my best to my limits in Physical Education thanks to this fellow basketball player.
