Have you ever imagined running into a burning house that’s going down in flames, with only seconds to get in and out to save someone’s life? Not many people have had the opportunity to experience such a concept and in my case, I haven’t either. However, I have the privilege to know someone who does this for a living. Joe Cable is a Firefighter, but also known in my mind as a Hero.
Joe Cable is my Hero. He’s a 19-year old, lives in Glendale, Ohio and works for the Lockland Fire Department. Currently, he is studying at Cincinnati State University to become a paramedic. Joe has been a firefighter for about a year now. He just moved from the Glendale Fire Department, as a half-time volunteer firefighter, to Lockland as a full-time firefighter.
Joe sleeps, eats, and pretty much lives at the Firehouse. They don’t get a large amount of fire calls, but they do still have calls during the night. This means most of them have to sleep at the Firehouse. Life at the Firehouse is just normal, until a call is made. They have a matter of seconds to get in their uniforms, get in the fire truck, and get to the fire.
I believe that Joe is both, a “survivor” Hero and Hero “within”. He’s a “survivor” hero because; he might not literally carry someone out of a burning building, but he prevents fires from happening in houses, facilities, schools, etc, thus saving lives. He’s also training to be paramedic, too. So he will have training to save lives, either in a fire or in other circumstances. He’s a Hero “within” because he has to have the “courage” to go into a burning building, not knowing what’s going to happen in the next few seconds and be able to determine how to stop the fire. It might burn up in flames or just fall flat to the ground. This is what he is trained to deal with.
Those few seconds that Joe has to get in and out of a burning building, saves peoples' lives. Joe is an exceptional young man and is fortunate to have the privilege and opportunity to save people’s lives daily. Dedication and the desire to help others are qualities needed to succeed as a fireman. Joe Cable has got it!
