My hero is my grandfather John L. Carnes. I see my grandfather as brave, courageous, and he has a lot of inner strength. For as long as I can remember, my grandfather has always been a tough guy. He is also a man who is very respectful, especially if you respect him back. Whenever I hang out with him, I always have the best time.
With what happened to my grandfather I could not even think about the pain that he went through. When my father told my brothers and me about how he lost his right leg I was astonished. This is what happened to him. A while ago when my dad was a kid my grandfather owned a Harley-Davidson. As he was driving his bike a man came up along side of him speeding and side swiped him. The man who hit him just took off. Luckily someone found him lying on the side of the road and called the hospital.
I think it is amazing that someone gets there leg taken off and stays conscious while lying on the side of the road waiting for someone to find him. Then he was awake when he had his leg patched up. My grandfather is the toughest person I know. He was in the Army during the Vietnam War and survived, before the accident happened.
I can't get it through my mind how lucky I am that grandpa survived the accident. If he didn't survive then my father wouldn't have turned out to be as great of a man as he already is. I would have never known my grandfather either, and that would be a disappointment.
My grandfather is my hero beacause, when I get hurt doing something I just think to myself this is not pain compared to what happened to my grandfather. I also think if my grandfather can survive losing a leg then I can survive a small cut or broken finger. I hope no one will ever experience something as horrible as what has happened to my grandfather, and I wish that the man that had hit him had brought him to the hospital.Perhaps they could have saved his leg. This is the story of my hero, my grandfather John Carnes.
