Charles Martin

by Shyann from Illinois

My hero is Charles Martin, my grandfather. He used to come and get me, my sisters and my brother and take us to Dairy Queen. He loved to play games with us like Catch The Money. He encouraged a lot of people and set good example for many people when my grandfather passed. Two of my uncle’s friends wrote in the newspaper about the impact he had on their lives.

He sacrificed a lot so I, my sister and brother could go to a private school. He wanted us to get a very good education, so we could be smart. My grandfather was a brick layer. By the trade? On Route 59 my great great grandmother has pointed out a nice and loving Church that will be there forever.

One of my grandfather’s passions was to play football when he was a corporal in the army. He joined on May 4th, 1952. He played semi-professional softball for the Joliet Brown Bombers.

Yes my grandfather is my hero in so many ways. He loved his grandchildren. He believed in helping anyone in need of help. He donated to the Thompson Home for the Disabled.

He never told a soul, until the day he had his last moment, until he had passed away. The Thompson Home told our family he gave very generously. We were also told that my grandfather had paid people's rent when they did not have the money, and never asked then to pay it back. His favorite thing to do was go fishing with his grand children and his children.

My grandfather died July 24, 2001. He was one of the best people in the whole wide world. He helped a lot of people, some he did not even know. He loved us like we were his own children. That is why I am writing about him.

Charles Martin
I see a funny guy, who will always love me.
And I hear laughter in his mind.
I smell feet and chicken too.
Taste Ham an old perfume.
Ohh a nice person also water in his hand.
Him sleeping here and to today.
Again also I want to say goodbye because
I care. I hope you care because I will care anywhere.
I wish I could see you here. But you are elsewhere,
I hope you remember me - sweet dreams.
