Chief Joseph is a hero because he cared for his people, he showed leadership and bravery. Here is one of his quotes “Hear me my chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. I will fight no more forever.”

Cheif Joseph cared for his people and was concerned where they lived. When the white settlers tried to take their land, even though his people were nice to settlers, they did not let them take their land. One of the wars they fought was in May 1877. Even though Chief Joseph wanted to make peace, three young Nez Perce killed three white settlers and that was how the war was started.

One reason he was a good leader is because he led his tribe to cross Montana and they escaped. Then they decided to stand strong. 800 of the tribe died. He cared so much he asked for schools, sawmills, shops and about $200,000 dollars but his father would not sign the treaty because they would lose a part of their land.

The last reason he is a hero is because he was brave. When they went to Canada for the land and to escape the white settlers, they hoped the Crow tribe would help them. The Crow tribe was wanting to take their horses. The Nez Perce did not get their help. The Crow tribe was on the U.S. Army side. Chief Joseph lead the women and children to safety while the men fought in the war.

Last, he surrendered and that is why he is brave, a good leader and he cared for his people. “I will fight no more forever,” Chief Joseph said.
