Cindy Nord

by Evan from Columbia

The person who I would consider a hero would be my grandmother Cindy Nord. She is the wife of my grandfather, Evan Nord, and she is the mother of five children. She has eight grandchildren including myself. She is a very nurturing and caring woman who helps abused and neglected children in Colombia.

She created and developed the Nurturing Center downtown in Columbia, South Carolina. She and her husband have donated millions of dollars to charities in Columbia and around the country. She has also written a book about her abusive childhood. She used the book as part of her Doctorate Degree, which she received in August of 2003.

Cindy Nord used to live in Oberlin, Ohio, where she raised her five children. She didn't go to college until her children were older. Her mother always told her she was stupid so she never believed she could make it in college. She now lives in Blythewood, South Carolina, right down the road from me. She owns a horse breeding farm named Meadowridge Farm.

When my grandmother first moved to Columbia she was in a Fox Hunt on horseback when her horse rolled over on top of her and broke her back. She has no feeling in her feet but she can still walk and she keeps going on with her life like nothing had ever happened.

My grandmother is still living today. She is my hero because she has the same learning difference that I have and she still went on and got her Doctorate Degree, even when people thought that this could never happen. She makes a difference in my life by giving me help when I need it and showing me that even though I have a learning difference I could still make a difference in the world like she has already done.
