My hero is Roberto Clemente; he was a professional baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I thought he was very talented, caring, and a great leader. Roberto lived from 1934 to 1972 and he died in a terrible plane crash. He is important to me because he died bringing supplies to a relief mission to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Bound for Nicaragua, Clemente and four others loaded a small DC-7 plane with food and supplies that never got past the San Juan border as the plane almost immediately crashed into 30 feet of water in the Caribbean Sea. He was a man who was struck down due to his desire to help a country in need.

I thought my hero was very caring because he was willing to risk his life to help others. He died bringing supplies to a relief mission to earthquake torn Nicaragua. He could have used his money for a better life. But instead, he donated most of his time and money to other countries.

Next, I thought my hero was talented. He played pro baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won four batting crowns and had 3,000 hits in his career. He was the MVP in 1966, batting .317 with 29 homers and 202 hits. In 1973, he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame, one of baseball’s greatest feats.

I think Roberto is a great leader. Many people should look up to him because he is a great person who set great examples of what a person should be. He didn’t waste himself; he was out doing something nice for people. Many rookies on the Pirates probably looked at him as a leader because he was a star right-fielder. He is an inspiration to all who know his story.

I can try to be like Clemente by working as hard as he did in what I do. I can be kind and generous like he was. But most importantly I can be as caring as him. That why he is my hero.
