I am a hero

by Corina from Balti

I am my hero because i am responsible for my own decision and i did all the work to get where i am today !

All my life i lived in a fully satisfaction about myself till I met an English speaker guy that is the best friend of my cousin and I couldn't even speak to him, I was most of the time quiet and I saw my cousin a little bit ashamed, at that time i wished i wasn't there. I understood that if you have good marks at school doesn't mean I know English. I came home and started to look for some opportunities in the city to learn the language. What i found was an Access Microscholarship Program where you should go twice per week during 2 years and have English classes for free. Soon i became their student. After 1 year i graduated.

After that i got involved in a voluntary program. Somehow i understood that i needed something more where to grow. I started to look for voluntary work abroad and i saw a link with AIESEC opportunities in more than 100 countries, i wrote them but i got a sad response as i wasn't 18 so i couldn't go! Right after 7 days from my 18th Birthday passed when i got invited to a workshop where there was an AIESEC member. By his presence I remembered about their opportunities, I wrote him in the same day! Next day i went to their office and spoke about fee and conditions of internships they have.

I went there as an English teacher, I went there to help some little kids to learn a language and to bring them a new culture. At the beginning it was hard, sometimes i was lost and confused. I don't know why I do wake up at 7 AM to get ready for kindergarten in a summer time while others sleep as much they want. I got my answers to the questions I had - I saw those little kids jumping around and singing songs that I have taught them. What can be better? Believe me, knowing you didn't spend your summer and money in vain, but enjoyment with kids as a volunteer makes you feel proud.

At the time I came home i was reintegrated in AIESEC as a simple member but there was a conference coming up and our Vice President of Incoming Exchanges was missing and i went as a Proxy one. After a month I was elected as Vice President of Incoming Exchanges of Balti, then I understood what this sentence means: "If you can't find a good role model, be one." To sum up I can say that I discovered I was the hero i had been waiting for. And If you are not the hero of your own story then you are missing the whole point of your humanity.
