“Go into all the world and preach the good news.” This is what my hero, David Hanes, from Trinity, N.C., says as he follows God. Hanes has been through a lot of ministries. He grew up in Faith Baptist Church for eight years and had always helped the youth group there. Then he got a phone call one day and Pastor Rodney Otwell asked Hanes to be the part time youth minister at Cornerstone Baptist. As time went on at Cornerstone, Hanes felt God calling him somewhere else but had no idea where. After the four years at Cornerstone he was called to Fairfield United Methodist Church to be a full time youth minister. Hanes said “I have enjoyed Fairfield. We have had our ups and downs, but I think it is time to move on.” So after two and half years at Fairfield, he resigned on February 4th 2007, and didn’t take a job anywhere else although he still continues to follow God.

Hanes became a Christian in 1993, when Pastor Steve Welborn came to his house to witness and reach out. Welborn shared God’s word and showed Hanes how to live a life revolving around God. After being shown God’s word, Hanes decided to make a choice to live for God. Hanes now follows God by being faithful when he hears from God and listening to him through the Bible and then acting upon it. Hanes also shared that he reads the Bible and prays every morning, giving all the glory to God!

Hanes has had some great rewarding memories, but he has also had sad, terrible moments where he felt like giving up but God has helped him stay strong. Hanes shared that his greatest memory of all time was just seeing people grow closer to the Lord and seeing people get saved. He also shared his worst memory of all which was seeing Leonard Bazen die from cancer. Bazen had two teens in the youth group and a wife; he had cancer for two year before he died. Hanes and Leonard were friends, so Hanes said to see him die was horrible. Hanes had to encourage Chad, Lindsey, and Amy Bazen’s children and wife that he is in a better place now praising the Lord.

Hanes was led to follow God when he realized that nothing in this world could fill the hole in his heart better than God could. Hanes said “Everyone is searching for satisfaction and fulfillment and only God can give that.” Hanes feels that he knows when to follow God; when He speaks through His word, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and other people.

Hanes has been through easy paths and struggling paths but no matter what, Hanes will always “Follow God.” “Let our light shine before people, so that they will see it and give glory to God.” This is what Hanes wants the whole world to know as he continues to follow God in whatever may come next in his ministry.
