Dean Coon

by Isabella

I have not known my hero for very long, as basketball season lasts only a few months. He is a volunteer for Country Day School, and has helped me and many others play the wonderful game of basketball. I met him for the first time this year, maybe a few months ago. Coach Dean is 59 years old, and his birthday is 5/4/53. He lives in Savannah, but he used to live in New York. Coach Dean's favorite colors are green and gold, and of course, his favorite sport is basketball. His favorite band is the Beatles, and his favorite college basketball team is The Duke Blue Devils. Coach Dean has wanted to coach and is coaching The Lady Hornets because he loves basketball and working with kids.

In Saratoga Springs, NY, an amazing hero and basketball coach was born. Coach Dean grew up playing sports, but he loved basketball the best. In his high school year, Coach Dean played basketball, soccer, and even ran 2 years of cross-country. In his senior year, he was a co-captain on the hoops team and they were undefeated in their conference. Coach Dean graduated after 4 years of college at Univ. of Vermont, and then attended 3 years of law school at Univ. of Akron. He and his wife moved to Savannah last September. His youngest daughter is a senior at SCAD, majoring in fashion merchandising. Coach Dean has done many things for me to consider him my hero. He has worked with all of us to teach us about the ways of basketball, and I think he has done a great job. He is my first coach, and I think he is wonderful at teaching basketball. Also, this year, on the team with Coach Dean, is my first time playing a team sport. Coach Dean is a great coach and has taught me well to get through my first year playing basketball. Learning and playing basketball with Coach Dean made me realize that basketball is my favorite sport. Before I was on the team, I did not play much basketball, nor was I a big fan. But with Coach Dean, I realized that basketball is a very fun sport filled with excitement and competitiveness.

Coach Dean is similar and different to ancient Greek heroes. He is different in many ways, including that he does not have a godly parent, and many ancient Greeks do. Also, Coach Dean does not fight heroes or go on quests, which is a normal feat for ancient Greek heroes. There are a few similarities, too, including that he and ancient Greek heroes both have at least one mortal parent. Also, they both have faced challenges, but in many different ways. Even though Coach Dean may not be a hero to all, he is definitely a very important hero to me.
