Hi, my name is Riley and my hero is Don Fonger. He was my grandfather and he is my hero because he fought in World War Two. The reason that inspires me is because he went into war risking his own life to make the world a better place and one day I hope that I can do the same as him. He led a group of guys into war. He was a very brave man and got many awards. My grandpa fought in World War Two where he was in Europe but spent most of his time in Italy and France and is lucky he survived because there was bombing every night and not a lot of places to stay overnight. Plus the Nazis were always on patrol. But he came back unharmed. At the time I was not alive yet so I couldn’t see him but usually soldiers come back home for a week then go back into war but this war he fought in was so horrid that he had no way of coming back until the war was over. He lost lots of his close friends in the war and it was really depressing. My dad and mom sent him lots of notes and half of them didn’t get to him because the plane was shot down but my grandfather fought through this horrible war and survived and to me is a hero. These are a lot of reasons why i picked my grandfather for my hero.

My Grandfather is Don Fonger and he fought in a terrifying battle, it was called D-Day. He started in a small boat called Higgins boats and would release a lever which lowered the front so the soldier could exit the boat and get on the beach. A soldier would have to carry lots of stuff on his back and so did my grandfather. He had to carry over a hundred pounds of stuff on his back and so did his fellow soldiers going on the beach.

My grandfather was a very high rank so he had to lead a group of soldiers on the beach and up the mountain. He had lots of guns getting fired at him so it was hard to move up the beach at the right time or he could get hit by bullets. Every time someone died he would have to take their dog tag off their neck and would say their age and when they were born. Even though he was high rank it doesn’t mean he was that high rank since he joined the army he had to work up his rank like everyone else.

Don Fonger was born on October 14, 1922 in Ontario and moved to Saskatchewan in 1948. Prior to moving to Saskatchewan, Don served with the Canadian army when he came back. He worked at the MET store in Moose Jaw. He married Elsie Volsky at the age of 18 in 1940. He died 1998 and Elsie died in 2010. They were married for 58 years and had four children - two girls and two boys. Their names were Spencer, Karin, Stewart and Colleen. He had red hair and brown eyes. Thanks for listening about my granddad and his exciting life. He is my hero.

After reading these paragraphs I hope you understand why I picked my grandfather. I picked him because he was brave, courageous, daring, and risking his own life to make the world a better place and never gave up. To me, he is a leader. I think he was a hero to my family and my ancestors. He inspired me and I hope he inspires other people. He won tons of medals but he only has them because he worked for them. Thank you for listening to my hero.
