He is an amazing artist, although he has had some life troubles. When I think about heroes he is the one that comes to my mind, and he is Doug Landis.

Doug Landis hasn't been an artist forever, he got injured in a high school wrestling accident. Since then he has been quadriplegic, which means paralyzed from the neck down. It is amazing how Doug's brother Monte, put a pencil in Doug's mouth and challenged him to a drawing contest. He practiced and practiced and slowly became a self-taught artist.

Doug had to take a break while he attended college. He earned a BA in Media Studies at Webster University, and he got a MFA in Valencia, California. But when Doug graduated, he started doing art again. He enjoys drawing endangered species. He had problems doing larger canvases, because of his limited reach, so he learned to paint in all directions.

Doug Landis doesn't sell his paintings, but he has them displayed all over the world, but mostly in the United States. He also doesn't do commission pieces because in his mind he has many paintings he wants to complete before that. He calls his pencil series "Vanishing Breeds" because they are all focused on endangered species.

Here are a few things I learned in an interview that I found extremely interesting: That he wasn't an artist before he was injured, he was an overactive kid with not enough time, or patience to sit down and draw, but when he did it was to doodle racecars, or spaceships. Also it takes him 40-400+ hours to complete one piece. I also learned that the human neck isn't made for the type that his drawing requires, so he has found himself injured or in therapy, from working too hard on his art.

I think Doug Landis is a hero, because of all the life troubles he has had in his life, but he hasn't given up and he still keeps a good attitude about it. That is what I think a hero is, someone who is inspiring, brave, caring and much more and I think Doug Landis would fit under all those categories. But I think the one reason I love him is that he dedicates himself to what he loves! :) <3
