Demi Lovato

by Kyra from San Diego

"One of the most scariest things in life, is when you come to the realization that the only thing that can save you, is...yourself." (Lovato). Demi makes others realize what a real role model is, and she also unknowingly makes some people come to the realization that she is a real role model as well. "To me, I don't think it does anybody any good to just hide something or cover it up or lie or whatever I think...that's what being a role model is all about. It's not about being perfect. It's about speaking about your issues and inspiring others to get help." (Lovato). Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Dallas, Texas. She had one sister when her parents divorced while she was at a very young age. Later in her life a new sister was given to her from her mom and step-dad. Ever since Demi began Elementary school she was a victim of bullying. Eventually, the bullying got so bad she started becoming an anorexic. When she finally realized that what she was doing was unhealthy she stopped, and replaced it with cutting. Demi Lovato is strong because she went through so much pain, heartbreak, and pressure and she's still standing. She didn't let any of that push her over the edge. She cares for others because she doesn't want anyone to go through what she did, and she'll do anything to stop people from feeling that way. Most people think of Demi as a troubled Disney star with an eating disorder, but in my eyes she is a person who stayed strong in the toughest of times, who cares for others not just herself and this is why she is an inspiration to me.

To most people the word Strong isn't the first thing that comes to their minds when they think of Demi Lovato. But to me and many others, Strong is the definition of Demi's name. Some people wouldn't think of Demi as strong, but weak. They think that she was too weak to handle all the pain and pressure that she resorted to cutting and ended up having an eating disorder. But, the way me and many others see it is that she was strong enough to keep her life going; even though it came crumbling down on top of her."She's struggled with an eating disorder, bullying problems, cutting herself, breaking up with Joe Jonas and then going on tour with him, and now she's completely checked out. This past weekend, she checked into rehab." (New York Post). Demi had been a victim of one of the few things many others are or have been a victim of as well, bullying. Like many others Demi chose cutting as a way to cope with the pain. But unlike them when Demi went too far she checked herself into rehab. Demi was strong enough to push through all that pain and get help. She knew she needed the help, and she got to it. Some people would have shut down. Their life slowly falling apart if one minute they were walking to school with their best friend and the next they see their best friend's name in a newspaper article talking about how they had hung themselves. "Me and my guardian angel. RIP Trenton Stout...it's been 4 years ago today. Love you..." (Lovato). Trenton Stout was Demi's childhood best friend. He was even stronger than her at one point. He was always smiling, and even though he had bullies of his own he helped Demi and stood up to hers. Trenton was the reason Demi wanted to stay strong. But unlike Trenton when things got even worse she stayed strong and lived through the pain, because she knew it would all get better in the end. Demi is a strong person because she stayed strong through all the hard times. She lived through all the pain and suffering, and got help when she knew she needed it. She kept living even when she wanted it all to just stop. She pushed and pushed until it got better.

Some people who go through a lot of pain and suffering become bitter and selfish. But Demi decided to take a different path and put others before herself. Everybody has their own reasons for wanting to get better when they're sick. Usually, the person they're thinking of during their recovery is themselves. Demi on the other hand wanted to get better for her little sister, Madison. Demi's family is extremely important to her. "I had to think of her, all the time when it was really, really rough. But I just kept thinking 'okay, set this example for your little sister.' And even though it may be hard to wake up in the morning - there were days where I just didn't want to get out of bed. And looking at a picture of my little sister on my little bulletin board was one of the main things that kept me going." (Lovato). While Demi was in rehab the only thing on her mind was getting better for her little sister Madison. She wanted there to be someone for Madison to look up to. She wanted to show Madison and many others that even when things are really, really bad it will eventually get better. You just need to pitch in and help make it happen. When Demi realized she could use her story to let people know they aren't alone, she came right out and told everyone. She believed that she could help people who are going through similar things that she went through. "Well, I've decided to tell my story because I know that there are a lot of young teens out there, girls and boys that are dealing with the same issues that I've been through. And so if I'm able to use my voice to do good in the world then I definitely want to do that." (Lovato). Demi told the world her personal life story in hopes that it will inspire others in the same situation to get help. She also did it to let them know that everything will get better again and to let them know that they're not alone. She wanted to do all she could to help the people that were going through hard times. She knew how it felt and what they were going through and she believed she could help them through it. She wanted to show people that the difficult times would also make them stronger. Demi doesn't just care about herself she also cares about others. Whether they're her fans or not, all she wants to do is let those people that are going through a hard time know that there's always a rainbow after the rain. She doesn't want them to go through what she went through. The thought of someone taking their own life because of the impact someone else had on them sent tornadoes into her stomach. She wants them to know that they're not alone, and that they will never be alone in this.

Demi Lovato is seen from many different points of view. Some see her as a bad influence. Some see her as a messed up star. Some see her as an X Factor judge. But some, like me, see her as inspirational. She was strong enough to fight through all the dark times, and she was brave enough to stand up for everyone else who's going through the same thing. Demi's childhood best friend Trenton meant everything to her. He was the reason she wanted to stay strong when she was getting bullied. Trenton was also being bullied at the time, but he was always so strong. So strong that he even stood up to Demi's bullies. Little did he know that they would start bullying him too. One day, he didn't come to school, and she grew more and more worried by the minute. Later that day she got a phone call informing her that Trenton couldn't fight anymore and committed suicide. A couple years back Demi was on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Somewhere along the road the Jonases noticed her eating disorder, and made her realize she was killing her body by not feeding herself. As soon as she realized she dropped everything and checked into rehab. While she was in rehab the only thing that kept her fighting threw the tough times was she little sister Madison. She wanted to set a good example for her. When Demi got out of rehab she took a stand against bullying. She shared her story in hopes that it would let people know they aren't alone. Demi Lovato inspires me because she went through family problems, bullying and heartbreak. In a lot of ways we're alike. The thought of self-harming had crossed my mind many times, but I could never actually go through with it. When I was at my darkest time where literally no one and nothing could change my mind about what I was going to do the thing that had stopped me was hearing Demi's story. Right away, I felt a connection to her. She understood how I felt because she went through the same thing I was. I thought I was alone. I thought no one cared, and understood what I was going through. She made me believe that there was hope. I needed to stay strong because even if things weren't going to be exactly the same, it was going to get better. Not a lot of people can handle what she went through without breaking, but she did. She was strong enough to live her life and she decided she wasn't going to give it all up just like that. She wanted to make a change. She wanted to stop people from feeling the way she did, and that's exactly what she's doing right now. She's using her fame, fans and especially her music to let people know they're not alone in this fight. An individual can change a life, but a group can change the world.
