Many people choose athletes, movie stars or super heroes, just to name a few, to be their heroes. The person that I selected as my hero has some great characteristics. My hero is courageous, helpful, compassionate, and most of all a Christian. Most of all, determined to do whatever she wants to do in life. For this reason I have selected Mrs. Deidre Reed as my hero.
Mrs. Reed graduated from the Florida Memorial College with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Reed realized that becoming an educator would allow her the ability to give back to her community. Deidre began her teaching career as a fourth grade teacher for students of English Language Learners at Southside Elementary. While teaching ELL students, her quest for learning and teaching minority students grew stronger. Mrs. Reed was offered a position as a second grade teacher at Gilbert L. Porter Elementary. Her career as a teacher flourished as she would become teacher of the gifted students, as well as a mainstream teacher for students identified as having Emotional Behavior Disorder. During this tenure of her career Mrs. Reed earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Florida State University. While demonstrating her ability as an effective educator, she was given the position as grade level chair for six years. During her last four years as grade level chair, Mrs. Reed was instrumental in help struggling students maintain high FCAT scores. She was awarded Gilbert Porter’s 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year and went on to become one of the District Finalists. She was and continues to be organized, efficient, and willing to do whatever was needed to get a particular task finished as grade level chair. Realizing that she had the potential of becoming a leader, Mrs. Reed earned her Specialist degree from NOVA Southeastern University in Educational Leadership.
Mrs. Deidre D. Reed has been instructing students for more than fifteen years. She has demonstrated the ability to instruct, mentor, and advise students, colleagues, family and friends to improve themselves academically. Deidre strongly believes that all children can and will learn and she does what it takes to make this statement true for all of the students she’s assigned.

Mrs. Reed later transferred to Irving and Beatrice Peskoe Elementary, a low socio-economic school, for the position as math coach. During her coaching and facilitation of the math program, the school grade rose from the letter grade of C to an A (3rd Grade 45% to 62%, 4th Grade 47% to 63%, & 5th Grade 30% to 49%). After serving two years as math leader at Peskoe, Deidre transferred to Campbell Drive Elementary as math coach. The 2008 FCAT math results demonstrated remarkable gains in the area of math. Additionally, all subgroups made Adequate Year Progress (AYP) in math. The position as math facilitator requires Mrs. Reed to coach new and veteran teachers, analyze data, prepare for assessments and assist in the completion of state and district paperwork. The nature of the work often introduces last-minute deadlines. Her cooperative attitude and good cheer is important and appreciated and each challenge has been met with the integrity and professionalism. Mrs. Reed’s quiet, but strong, leadership style has been a great addition to the school leadership team.
My hero Mrs. Reed is a true believer of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Reed feels that having the love of Christ in her heart is most important to her successes. Telling people about God’s love and grace has a great impact with the people that she meets. Mrs. Reed believes that prayer is the key to all answers with communicating with God. My hero sings praises to God every day and night. Now that she is an assistant principle she finds herself ministering to single parents, children being raised by grandparents or guardians, and coworkers about the power of God.
In conclusion, Deidre D. Reed is my hero because of her determination, her helpful ways, compassion, and most of all she is a true believer of our Lord Jesus Christ. Deidre Reed has achieved several of her goals. She is the most courageous person I have ever known. I can tell all these years she have been pushing herself to the fullest and she still is trying to become the greatest person that God wants her to be. That’s why Deidre D. Reed, my mom, is my hero.
