Derek Jeter

by Tim from Laguna Beach

Derek Sanderson Jeter is my hero. He is a New York Yankee. He has created charities that have helped kids play baseball that can’t afford to play it. He has a few of these in New York and the others are in New Jersey. I heard about the Yankees from my dad’s side of the family in New Jersey and when I started to play baseball myself, I recognized that he was a very good player and I wanted to play like him on the field when I was older.

Derek Jeter has many accomplishments in his fantastic baseball career. In 1996 he won Rookie of the Year, in 2000 he won MVP and the Babe Ruth Award. That was a pretty good start to his career, in the later years he has won 5 Golden Gloves, 4 Silver Sluggers, All Star MVP, 2 Hank Aaron awards, and the Player of the Year.

Derek lives in New York right now but soon he will be selling his house and moving to Florida. Before all of this he was born in Pequannock, NJ. He had a poor family, with brothers and sisters but he was determined as a child to be a baseball player and to him baseball was more important than going outside and playing with friends because he knew he had to practice and he would do it every single day. His father was a big inspiration to him.

He was born in 1974 and is still alive. Ever since he was little he has wanted to be a baseball player and fulfilled his dream with a lot of practice and motivation. His father helped him as much as he could with his baseball; with his swinging, stance, focus, and reaction. Another thing is that he surrounded himself with all baseball related things besides school.

Derek Jeter is important to me because he has driven me to play baseball and one day I would like to end up like him. If I do end up like him and play in the major league I would open up and start a lot of foundations and programs of a kind of boys and girls club for poor kids to play any sport. Their family would not have to purchase the things needed to play the sport of their desire. The reasons I picked Derek Jeter as my hero are his desire for his future and the things he does for unfortunate families.
