Charles Darwin

by David from Canoga Park

Charles Darwin is considered a hero to a lot of people in the world. Some people might not think he’s great but I think he was an important man is history. It is because of Darwin that all known facts of animals (including new found species), are known and recognized to this very day. This whole new idea of new animal facts was introduced to the public, in England anyway, in the year 1859. When the book, "The Origins of Species" was read and recognized by people, it shocked the world. The complete title of the book was, “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle of Life.”

When the book was read, people coined two words from his studies. Social Darwinism is a word still used today. It meant survival of the fittest, which explained how the whole animal kingdom was to survive, which in some cases is very true. But the book basically focused on the evolution of plants and animals. (But a lot of people were interested in this because it was a whole new concept to them). The book was not accepted in the beginning. People thought that species were eternally unchanging. Basically meaning that animals never evolved or changed. They remained the same. All of that changed when Darwin’s book was introduced.

In order for Darwin to introduce his ideas to the public, he had to travel a lot. He traveled to South America, Africa, and other places. Of course he was not alone. He had guides to help him on his way. He traveled through jungles, forest, and other places. It was difficult journey for him. But when he returned he came down with a series of sicknesses. He thought it came from when he traveled through the jungles of South America. After all his travels, he had his notes published and they became some of the most famous books in the world.

Because of his studies, he is considered my hero. If I were to meet him I would be surprised. I would not know what to say. I would congratulate him for all his hard work and for helping us understand the animal kingdom better. I think it is great that he did all he did. Maybe that is why he is called the father of modern biology.
